Radiation Oncology

Patient Instruction Sheet

CNS

CT/Simulation:

CT/Simulation is the first procedure that you will undergo.  This procedure will take approximately one hour and involves making a special mask, which will be worn each day for treatment.  The mask is used to position you accurately on a daily basis and alignment marks are placed on it to avoid placing skin markings on the face.  In order to make the mask a plastic material is submerged in warm water until soft.  The material is then stretched over the head and usually the neck area.  The material has holes throughout and does not restrict breathing.  If you have any concerns regarding claustrophobia, please discuss with your Radiation Oncologist prior to your appointment.

Treatment:

You will be called with an appointment time to return for your treatment, usually about 5 business days after the simulation.  The therapist will work with you to provide the best possible appointment time that is available.  The amount of time spent for your treatment will depend on the anatomical site of treatment and complexity of the procedure.  You will be seen by the Radiation Oncologist and Registered Nurse once weekly, so please plan to spend additional time in the department for this visit.  Your Radiation Oncologist may order lab work while you undergo treatment.

Precautions during Treatment:

1. Ensure you get plenty of rest.

2. Maintain a balanced diet. Please inform our staff if you experience any nutritional issues, i.e. weight loss, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea.  If you continue to have eating difficulties, notify our staff so a dietician consultation can be made for you.

3. Use mild shampoo when washing the scalp/hair.  Do not scrub the area and pat dry.  You may experience some hair loss in the treatment area.

4. Do not use any harsh soaps, lotions, powders, or perfumes in the treatment area.

5. Lotions or ointments that are prescribed by the Radiation Oncologist can be used after treatment daily and washed off daily before treatment to avoid irritating the treatment area.
