Radiation Oncology

Patient Instruction Sheet

Breast

CT/Simulation:

CT/ Simulation is the first procedure that you will undergo.  This procedure will take approximately 1 hour.  You will be required to raise your arm on the affected side above your head for the duration of the procedure.  If you have had surgery and have difficulty raising your arm, notify your Radiation Oncologist prior to your appointment.  During the simulation, you will be placed in the position that you will be given treatment.  Also, a CT scan will be preformed and marks will be placed on your skin in the treatment area by the Radiation Oncologist.  Clear tape will be placed over the marks to help maintain them.

Treatment:

Normally, you will leave the department after your simulation with an appointment for your treatments.  If you do not then, you will be called with an appointment time for your treatment, usually about 5 business days after your simulation.  The therapist will work with you to provide the best possible appointment time available.  The amount of time spent for your treatment will depend on the complexity of the procedure.  You will be seen by the Radiation Oncologist and Registered Nurse once weekly so please plan to spend additional time in the department for this visit.  Your Radiation Oncologist may order lab work while you undergo treatment.

Precautions during Treatment:

1. Ensure you get plenty of rest.

2. Continue to perform range of motion exercises during your treatment as instructed by your surgeon.

3. Maintain a balance diet.  Please inform our staff, if you experience any nutritional issues i.e. weight loss, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea.  If you continue to have eating difficulties, notify our staff so a Dietician consultation can be made for you.

4. Do not remove the marks placed on your skin.  Showers are recommended for daily hygiene.  Allow water to run over the skin marks, use mild soap in the area and pat the area dry.  The marks may rub off on clothing, therefore old undergarments or t-shirts are suggested to avoid staining your clothing.  The therapists will touch up the skin marks as needed.

5. Avoid swimming, Jacuzzi or other activities which will cause the marks to fade.

6. Do not use deodorant or lotions under the arm of the treated breast.  Deodorant may contain metallic particles which may increase the skin reaction.  Corn starch or unscented baby powder can be used instead.

7. Do not shave under your arm of the treated breast.

8. Protect the treatment area from outside elements.  Avoid sun exposure, extreme temperatures and do not apply a heating pad or ice pack to the treatment area.

9. Inform the Radiation Oncologist of all medications you are taking.

Cancer information booklets are available in the waiting room and exam rooms and copies can be made at your request.
